Storing your Jewelry

To keep your jewelry in it’s best condition it’s important to store it properly. This helps prevent scratches, tangles and damage.

  • Invest in a storage option that has hooks or places to hang individual pieces. it doesn’t have to be a jewelry box - I’ve seen a number of wall hanging options that allow your to store your jewelry tangle free and to enjoy seeing it when you enter the room.

  • If you prefer a less is more approach, or use drawers - laying pieces flat is the best solution to protect them - especially pearls or beads that are strung. This prevents the cord from becoming stretched out.

Wipe down your jewelry with a soft cloth before storing it.

  • This can remove any moisture, oils or dust and can slow tarnishing.

Store Gold and Silver Jewelry Separately

  • Gold is a softer Metal than Sterling Silver and can be scratched by other nearby pieces.

Store Silver with Chalk

  • Chalk (or silica packs) remove moisture which can cause tarnish to develop faster.

One of the most common jewelry problems is chains getting tangled. But don’t let this nuisance keep you from wearing your favorite jewelry pieces.

  • To aid in the untangling process, you can use a q-tip and rub a bit of oil on the knot - olive oil, coconut, whatever you have on hand. This will help the chain slide against itself as you untangle it.

  • Another trick to help untangle chains is to use thumb tacks or safety pins. I use the points to hold and pull sections of the chain. Some people use tweezers but I find the tacks or pins to work better for me.

For traveling with jewelry use the straw trick to keep your chains from getting tangled.

  • Thread your chain through a plastic or paper straw and close the clasp. This keeps the chain stretched out and protected, thus preventing tangles. You can also cut the straw to size to fit smaller chains, or use two for a long strand.
